Ben

I liked Design Technology (DT) at school so chose to carry on at College. I enjoy practical, hands-on work, which is exactly what this Carpentry course offers.

In the first year you focus on using hand tools to get your skills up to scratch. You also have training on some of the machines ready for bigger projects. In the second year you move on to jobs like hanging doors and fitting kitchen parts such as cupboard doors. As you move along the course you use a wider range of tools and learn more skills.

We’ve made a teapot stand to put our skills into practice. It has a trivet base made from cross halving and then we have used different planes – a jack plane and rebate plane – to sand it down before painting or varnishing ready for use. We’ve also made a CD rack. The facilities are very good with lots of new equipment.

The theory work is also very interesting. We learn about health and safety, the trade, foundations of a building and different types of wood and how it’s produced from tree to timber.

Our tutors know the trade very well and are always there to help you. I’ve got a part-time job and also had some work experience with my dad who is a Mechanic. We have a big project going on at home converting a water tower into a house, so there is lots to learn there!

I’d like to progress on to the next level and then find an apprenticeship in Site Carpentry so I can learn on the job.
