Need to know
- HNC or other Level 4 qualification in a Mechanical Engineering
You will be required to undertake an interview with the course manager where along with a general discussion about your engineering experience and prior qualifications you may be asked to demonstrate a sound understanding of mathematics and engineering principles.
What qualification will I gain?
Mechanical Engineering HND.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is on a continual basis and will include a range of assessment methods, such as: time-constrained tests, assignments, practical lab-work, research projects, presentations etc.
You will study:
The following are our standard units delivered for HND in Mechanical Engineering.
- Engineering Mathematics 2 (1st year of HND)
- Managing People (1st year of HND)
- Project (2nd year of HND)
- Thermodynamics and Fluid Dynamics (2nd year of HND)
- Heat transfer and combustion (2nd year of HND)
- CAD for Technicians and Engineers (2nd year of HND)
On successful completion of the HND you may have the option to further top-up the qualification to a full Bachelor’s degree at university.
The awarding body for this qualification is the University of Northampton. Dependent upon your route into HND you may begin study during your second year of HNC and complete the HND in a further third year (3 years total for HNC and HND).
Alternatively, you may begin your HND in the years following your HNC completion in which case your first year will comprise of 2 units (half-day study at Bedford College) followed in the second year with a full day’s study of 4 units.
Additional study and reading will be required and expected outside of College hours. Bridging units may be necessary to ensure transition to the HND is possible if your HNC is from another awarding body.
