Horticulture Intermediate (Level 2)

The full-time BTEC Technical Diploma in Horticulture Level 2 is a 1-year course which provides the skills to progress to a more advanced qualification or work in the horticultural industry. The course will prepare you to work with plants, learn about propagation and soil management and undertake an extended work placement with an employer.  You will learn about the wider horticultural industry including a variety of industry jobs such as nurseries, garden centres, parks, sports grounds, soft and hard landscape contractors, or in private gardens.

Shuttleworth College has a working walled garden where all of our horticulture students gain excellent experience of working in a specialist horticultural setting, learning in both practical and theory lessons including, planting and cultivations, soil health and plant names. You will have access to the wider college estate including green houses, polytunnels and machinery centre to give you an excellent understanding of the horticultural industry.

Need to know

Entry requirements

Essential:

3 GCSEs grades 9–3  including English & Maths and a keen interest in horticultural studies.

Desirable:

Other relevant levels of qualification or experience will be considered.

What qualification will I gain?
  • BTEC Level 2 Technical Diploma In Horticulture.
  • GCSE Maths and English if required.
How will I be assessed?

You will be continually assessed as the study programme progresses; a variety of methods of assessment will be used, including presentation, case studies, assignments and practical assessments.

Course content

What will I study?

There are five mandatory units:

  • Health and Safety
  • An introduction to plant and soil science
  • Horticulture work placement
  • Land-based machine operations
  • Estate maintenance

You will also Study 3 further units which are specific to horticulture development

  • Establishing and maintaining plants and seeds
  • Nursery stock production
  • Propagation techniques

Next steps

Course progression:

Following successful completion of this course you will be able to progress to a Level 3 Qualification within horticulture or other land based sector.

Career progression:

Horticultural job opportunities following completion of the course include:

  • assistant groundsperson
  • horticultural worker
  • trainee gardener

Additional information

To study this course you will be required to have:

PPE:

  • Steel Toe Capped Boots or Wellington Boots
  • 1 Pairs of Overalls or water proof coveralls

To take part in this course you will be required to pay up to £60 for PPE. There will also be non-compulsory trips of approximately £300 to support with wider industry understanding.
