Overview
Visual Art & Design Interaction Fashion & Textiles (Full time)In today’s challenging world, we face a multitude of living and environmental questions which the art and design industries can forge its energies to address. There is always a need for dialogue and collaboration in order to break boundaries, develop understanding and impact change for the greater good. The first year of this course, therefore, will see students with interest in both art and design, collaborate and develop closer working relationships to evolve practical solutions to thematic concerns. We will offer workshops that stimulate debate around significant issues alongside promoting and developing skills from across the Fine Arts, Interior, Product and Fashion and Textiles.
The first year of the course is an interaction of subject attributes and concerns alongside student collaboration. By the end of year one individuals will have an insightful understanding of both artists and designers. Graduating students would then be well-placed to enter and develop their practices with a more specialist focus for the HND and to target degree level study and Industry.
Students will develop broad-based skill sets that will set them up for flexible employability across the art & design disciplines. Students will regularly engage with professionals through live projects and talks and will be tasked with exhibiting work and sharing their progress in a variety of contexts.

Entry requirements
To join the course, you will need either a National Diploma in an Art & Design subject, Diploma in Foundation Studies, or an equivalent Level 3 qualification, or a T Level pass in an appropriate subject area. Applicants from A-Level programmes displaying high levels of creativity will also be considered, as will mature students, who will be considered individually on experience rather than qualifications.
Entry will also be subject to a successful interview, where you will be asked to present a portfolio of your creative work, including developmental worksheets or sketchbooks.
Applicants who are non-native English speakers and who have not undertaken their two years of schooling in English, need to demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to:
- Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) Level B2
- Pearson Test in English (PTE) Academic 51
- IELTS 5.5; Reading and Writing must be 5.5.
- Or equivalent
You will be suited to this course if you have the ability and/or potential to:
- Work imaginatively across 2 & 3D media with both conceptual and aesthetic considerations.
- Generate and develop creative ideas in response to a wide range of briefs.
- Articulate and communicate your creative intentions clearly.
- Show a willingness to collaborate and discuss your work in group situations.
- Reflect critically on your activities and learning and demonstrate intellectual inquiry.
- Embrace new ways of thinking and exploit the potentials of emerging technologies and sustainable materials.
Assessment methods
Project briefs with set deadlines are issued for each unit. These are assessed and graded upon hand-in and an overall grade is calculated based on performance across the activities. There are no examinations.
Course content
Course delivery is by practising, specialist Fine Art, Interior, Product and Fashion and Textiles lecturers including visiting professionals in well-equipped studios supported with one-to-one tutorials and group discussions, seminars to inform personal progress and presentation skills.
The course consists of two assessment units which cover the development of core competencies for the workplace: contextual knowledge, ideas generation, design strategies, technical knowledge and skills, professional practice and communication and presentation skills.
UNIT 1: Concept & Development
Through this unit, you will develop the underlying knowledge and skills to enable you to begin your journey with Visual Art & Design Interaction.
UNIT 2: Creative Project
This unit is designed to consolidate and apply your learning from Unit 1 through the production of a specialist project or series of projects within a discipline/area of work of your choice.
You will have the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively on assignments that explore:
- Drawing & Conceptual Visualisation
- Visual Language, Colour Theory, Print and Surface Design
- Contextual Referencing
- Digital Technologies*
- Exploratory Inquiry into Materials, Techniques and Processes
*In the first year you will be introduced to Adobe Photoshop, illustrator and CAD
Next steps
Upon completion of the HNC, the natural progression is to continue your studies into year 2 by studying on the HND (Higher National Diploma) course. Post HND, you have options to study at degree level at other nationwide institutions. Students pursuing this qualification are employed as anything from artist, artist- technicians, print technicians, curatorial and gallery workers, Interior designers, Interior stylists, Product designers, Furniture designers, Lighting designers, Textile designers, Print designers, Garment designers, Fashion buyers etc.
Additional information
You will need a basic art & design toolbox with a variety of equipment such as pencils, pens, scalpels, rulers, an external hard drive.
In-studio, colour laser and 3D printing is provided free of charge.
For students completing (not progressing to HND) approximately £150 for developing a personal portfolio and self-promotional items.
Students will provide funds for train costs to London and /or other travel for participation in departmental overseas cultural trips.
Attendance times
You will be required to attend college 12 hours (2 days a week) and to additionally supplement the course hours by working independently a minimum of 12 hours each week. (Days of attendance will be confirmed by Tutors).
