Course information

Workshop 1

Playing Card Print (1) Mono-print.

October 22

Rooted in the classic heraldic portraits of Kings, Queens and Jacks found on playing cards, the idea would be to construct a printed motif using the mono-printing process. This would start with demonstrations to outline the process involved and would begin with black ink to be able to get to grips with the process, which harnesses a variety of mark-making tools with the aim that each student would experiment with ahead of producing a final print with 2 colours.

Workshop 2

Playing Card Print (2). Collograph.

December 17

Rooted in the classic heraldic portraits of Kings, Queens and Jacks found on playing cards, the idea would be to construct a printed motif using a Collographic Print process. This will begin with plate-making using a range of textured materials taped down with double-sided tapes alongside various scratched marks drawn into the plate.

As a halfway house, students will be encouraged to make rubbings from the plates to be able to visualise what they done. This will enable them to alter their images to a preferred outcome. Finally, they would roll ink on the plates and print by hand and maybe through the press.

Workshop 3

Still life Drawing. Charcoal.

February 11th

Starting with examples of compositional thumbnails to illustrate possible choices, students will use viewfinders to select a viewpoint of the still life set-up ahead of making a collection of thumbnails.

Students will also be shown both additive and subtractive approaches to using charcoal and aim to make a large tonal drawing.

Workshops 4/5

Line Drawings. Marker pens/ink (2 classes).

April 1 and May 20

Using the theme of Urban Weeds, which students will collect for the session, they will use extended arms and marker pens to tune into the wispy-nature of the plants and target LINE.

Students will then be introduced to drawing ink and use coffee sticks to draw with to develop the linear and tone of line aspects of their drawings.
