There is approximately a 50/50 split between practical and theory.

- Principles of electrical science
- Electrical installations technology
- Installation of wiring systems and enclosures
- Understanding how to communicate with others with building services engineering.

If you find employment during the year you can transfer to the Electrical Installation NVQ Level 3 required for becoming a qualified electrician.
Our students have been on trips to look at how power stations operate and theme parks such as Alton Towers to see how rides work. The department runs both internal and external student competitions with other colleges with toolkits as prizes throughout the year. Every year we have local employers contacting us to recruit our best students, give talks on what they look for in prospective employees and giveaway prizes for the best and most improved students. Past students have gone on to work for major projects such as The Shard and Crossrail, to working as apprentices for the Red Bull Formula one team.
To take part in this study programme you will need to:
- purchase steel toe footwear, safety glasses and gloves for practical sessions
- provide note-taking equipment, a scientific calculator, along with the current versions of the OSG (On Site Guide) that costs approximately £28

I enjoy the practical side of the Electrical Installation. We’ve made cages for cables from metal trunking, which we had to cut and bend into shape. We also have to wire up a board; we’re given a photo to copy and have to take the measurements and wire it up to standard.
In the theory lessons we look at preparation for work sites – from the stages of jobs, to site plans and schematics – ready for use in the future.
My tutors are brilliant and good fun to be around. It’s everyone’s choice to be here so we all get the work done. We’ve had speakers come in from local companies to talk to us about how to write a good CV and work experience opportunities.
I want to stay on and complete Level 2. I’m currently employed by Center Parcs as a Lifeguard so I plan to look at electrical opportunities within the company, such as electric maintenance or a service technician apprenticeship.
