Education and Training City & Guilds Level 3 Award (Formerly PTLLS)

Teacher Education HE Part-time

Overview

Education and Training City & Guilds Level 3 Award (Formerly PTLLS)

This City and Guilds Level 3 course is for those who wish to teach adults in further education colleges, adult education centres or the workplace. It is an introductory course so no previous teaching experience or access to teaching is needed. Studied at Level 3, this is a good starting point if you are looking to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Applicants do not need to be in a teaching role to do this course.

This introductory, knowledge-based teaching qualification has no minimum teaching practice requirement, meaning it can be undertaken by individuals who are not in a teaching role. However, there is a minimum requirement to take part in microteaching.

Course information

Entry requirements

This qualification is suitable for individuals who:

  • are not in a teaching role, or who have just started a teaching role;
  • want a short qualification;
  • have the potential to study at this level, which has the same level of demand as that of study for A-levels;
  • want a qualification without a minimum teaching practice requirement;
  • may have already achieved some Learning and Development units that can be carried forward into this teaching qualification.

Applicants need to be suitably qualified up to Level 3 and/or experienced to teach in a chosen subject  and have adequate literacy, numeracy  and ICT skills to cope with three written assignments at Level 3.

Course content

After gaining the Level 3 Award in Education and Training qualification, you will be able to:

  • Understand how to use different teaching techniques
  • Plan interesting and effective lessons
  • Know how to teach confidently and effectively
  • Be able to assess how well your candidates are learning

This is your passport to teaching and training. Once you have gained the Level 3 Award in Education and Training you can get started teaching real classes, organising training events and put your new teaching skills into action.

Assessment methods

You will complete three written assignments covering the topics above. As part of one of the assignments you will plan and deliver a 15-minute micro teaching session to the rest of the class on a suitable subject of your choice.

Further study and career options

This is an introductory course that will improve your confidence and practice if you are already teaching or wish to go into teaching. In order to become a qualified lecturer or trainer a further course of study would be needed, such as the Certificate in Education or PGCE (CertEd/PGCE).

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is a nationally recognised qualification for teaching in post-16 education (i.e. adult education). It gives teachers, or those wishing to teach in the adult, post compulsory sector, a recognised, good quality award that will enable them to show they have the required skills to deliver training and carry out assessment during that training. They can then progress to a Level 4 qualification or a Level 5 qualification as they gain experience and expertise – finishing with a full QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) qualification if they so wish. It has been developed in conjunction with City & Guilds and Ofqual and is the latest and most up to date qualification in the education and training field.
