Kiera

I love photography because I enjoy being able to capture a moment in time in one image – and make someone wonder what was happening at that moment. I was given my dad’s old camera when I was 11 and started photographing animals and landscapes. From then on I used to ask for a new camera every Christmas as my interest grew!

My favourite part of the Photography study programme so far has been the portraiture work. We’ve been studying different face lighting and learning how to use the lighting equipment and coloured gels in the studio.

I also enjoyed our trip down to London where we visited the Tate Modern and then practised some street photography along the South Bank; this taught me to be more careful with how I frame pictures and think more about the composition.

People are a lot less judgemental at College compared to school and everyone has a shared interest, which helps. Our tutors are all very helpful and explain the work really nicely.

I plan to continue studying Photography either at university or here at College on the Higher National Certificate (HNC) course. Once fully trained, I’d love a career as a freelancer – perhaps in portrait or travel photography.

The study program covers a range of disciplines that include: both digital and darkroom work within portraiture, street and studio photography. The program also encourages experimentation within drawing and 3D. You are also encouraged to work with and across the other pathways

In the first year you will explore the basics of the creative structure.

Term one is an introduction to the elements that underpin development and understanding of your subject (practical, research, contextual).

Term two allows you to develop and employ this knowledge within a range of projects focused around two, three and time based dimensions

Term three gives you the chance to work on an Awarding Body set project that will utilise the knowledge from the first two terms. Your overall grade for the year will be taken from this final unit.

The second year allows you to expand on your knowledge, developing work and creating a unique style for your portfolio. This will include exhibitions, vocational assignments and student devised projects expanding on tasks of your choosing.

Within each year there is a mandatory tutorial and work experience programme alongside a number of short additional qualifications devised to support and enhance your journey through college and beyond.
