6. Shuttleworth College showcases rare animals to local school students

6 ZEC school visit

Shuttleworth College has been strengthening ties with local schools and the community by offering hands-on learning experiences at its Zoological Education Centre (ZEC).

By opening its doors to schools, students get a unique opportunity to interact with a wide range of animals, many of which they may never have the chance to see again in their lifetime.

In December, pupils from Kingsthorpe College in Northampton visited the ZEC as part of a collaborative school elective programme in Zoological Science. Over the course of the visit, students explored topics such as animal behaviour, habitats, and nutrition. Using remote technology, they also designed and created enrichment devices for the animals, which they later observed in action during their visit.

Educating future generations

These trips give school pupils  an opportunity to witness first-hand the importance of conservation, especially at a time when many rare species face growing threats from climate change. With rare animals such as binturongs and armadillos among the residents, Shuttleworth College recognises its unique responsibility to educate the future generation about wildlife preservation.

Carl Groombridge, Head of the Zoological Education Centre, highlighted the importance of outreach work:

“It’s always a joy to share our passion for wildlife and conservation with the next generation. These experiences can have a lasting impact, especially for those who may never have another opportunity to see these incredible species up close. Thank you to Kingsthorpe College for bringing your curiosity and enthusiasm.”

This initiative is part of Shuttleworth College’s wider commitment to working with schools and the community, ensuring that young people have access to educational opportunities beyond the classroom. By showcasing state-of-the-art facilities and expert-led programmes, the College hopes to inspire future conservationists and spread awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife for generations to come.

Feedback from Kingsthorpe College has been overwhelmingly positive, with both staff and pupils declaring it their ‘best elective programme to date’!

Shuttleworth College and the ZEC host a range of dates for schools and the local community to interact with the animals throughout the calendar year.
