Last term the Digital Experience Team at the College officially launched a Digital Innovation Hub, a cutting-edge facility designed to equip staff with digital skills and tools to introduce in to the classrooms and to support students in careers within the technology sector.

The hub, based at the Tresham College Kettering campus, provides state-of-the-art digital resources, including industry-standard software and the latest technology to support learning in cybersecurity, programming, artificial intelligence, and digital design. Staff and students can experiment with equipment such as VR headsets and incorporate it into their learning. It has been developed in partnership with local and international employers to ensure students gain relevant, in-demand skills.

Importance of Digital Skills

The launch event brought together education leaders, industry professionals, internationally renowned CISCO and local businesses, all highlighting the importance of digital skills in today’s economy.

Manager of the Hub, Mark Tinney said:

“One of the problems that a lot of schools and colleges have is spending a lot of money on buying equipment and [then] getting teachers to use it, and it having an impact on teaching. “Training them on how to use it isn’t enough; we’ve got to follow that through, and that’s what this space is intended to do.”

Robin Webber-Jones, Executive Director of Curriculum at The Bedford College Group, emphasised the impact of the facility:

“The Digital Innovation Hub is a vital step forward in preparing our students for the future workforce. By working closely with employers, we can ensure our students gain the right skills in the classroom to meet industry demand, strengthening the local and regional economy.”

This investment showcases the Group’s ongoing approach to supporting students and businesses with the skills needed for the modern workplace. In turn, directly addressing the skills gap.

Since opening the first Digital Innovation Hub, another sister Hub has been opened at the Group’s Bedford College campus and another due to open at Central Bedfordshire College in the summer.
