Bedford College students have helped transform outdoor space at the Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire MS Therapy Centre after designing and building raised flower beds as part of a hands-on community project.

The project saw T Level Brickwork students work alongside tutors to construct double-skinned wall planters at the Bedford-based centre, creating a welcoming outdoor area for people living with Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s.

A lasting experience

As well as giving students valuable industry experience, the project has created a lasting space for members of the centre to enjoy together.

Hard work and professionalism

Shirley Scotcher, CEO of the Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire MS Therapy Centre, praised the students for their hard work and professionalism.

Shirley commented:

“For people living with MS and Parkinson’s, it can sometimes feel as though they are overlooked or forgotten, so having so many young people come into the centre and create something so special for them has been incredibly uplifting for everyone involved.

“Our members are already excited about deciding what to plant in the new beds, and I know it won’t be long before they are flourishing and bringing joy to so many people who visit the centre.”

She added:

“The students and lecturers have all been incredibly professional, hardworking and respectful throughout. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the whole team, and we very much hope to work together again in the future.”

The initiative was supported by Jewson, which donated 1,000 bricks to help bring the project to life.

Gregg Jackson, Director at Jewson, said:

“At Jewson, we are always keen to support our partners, particularly when it involves developing young people through a local community project. We have a long association with the MS Centre and were delighted to supply materials to Bedford College to support their work.”

Peter Duffy, Programme Manager for Construction Trades at The Bedford College Group, said:

“The opportunity for our T Level Brickwork students to design, build and complete the double-skinned wall planters for the MS Centre has been hugely valuable.

“It has given them the chance to work together as a team in a live environment and experience the realities of working on site. Opportunities like this allow our students to develop their confidence, showcase their skills and make a positive contribution to the local community.”

Making a difference

The project highlights The Bedford College Group’s commitment to giving students meaningful opportunities beyond the classroom, helping them develop practical skills, confidence and teamwork while making a positive difference within the local community.
