North Northants Council has launched a dedicated working group, bringing together educators, council members, and business leaders to help empower future generations to positively impact their local communities and economy.

Tresham College is at the forefront of these discussions due to education and skills being considered a core component of this ongoing work.

Initially referred to as ‘The Big 50’, this ongoing initiative is working towards achieving its goals by the year 2050, by which point further generations will be adults contributing to society.

The aim of this innovative group is to encourage young people to become qualified professionals for essential industries such as housing, town planning, healthcare, support services and many more by bringing together anchor institutions to create a thriving community where people want to live, work and travel to.

The ‘Big 50’ hopes to improve the current Local Skills Improvement Plan,  led by Northamptonshire  Chamber of Commerce , and combine this work with other ongoing campaigns within North Northamptonshire. The partnership is in the process of securing funding and supporting research and the findings from this research by sector will be launched in the new year together with a formal action plan put in place.

Principal at Tresham College, Robin Webber-Jones, said:

“In terms of positive education progression there have already been a number of activities taking place. For example at The Corby Sixth Form there has been a ‘teach meet’ with all key stage levels of education and the University of Northampton to raise literacy skills. Research shows that good levels of literacy are a key determinant of life chances, and there is a need to improve this in Northamptonshire.”

Supporting skills and development initiatives

Alongside Higher Education, the Big 50 is also currently working with local primary schools to involve them in the ongoing work.

We are inviting local organisation and employers to register their interest in several upcoming events in the new year  to contribute to these essential foundations for Northamptonshire’s future. These events will provide local businesses with a chance to support the development of specific skills  and education initiatives.
