Learning centres celebrate high pass rates one year after Wellingborough opening

The Bedford College Group’s Learning Centres across Northamptonshire are celebrating fantastic pass rates above the national average.

The Centres in Corby, Kettering, Bedford and Wellingborough are professional learning environments which offer free accredited courses to local adults. Although there are a range of courses on offer, these courses focus on increasing IT skills and digital competency. These courses are free for individuals who meet the eligibility criteria. Alongside these courses, the centres also offer bursaries, customer service and career advice.

The pass rate across all adult provisions was 98.9% this year, an increase of 4.7% compared to the same 2023 results. These pass rates are also significantly higher than the national average of 92.1%.

These fantastic results have been achieved just a year after the opening of a new Learning Centre in Wellingborough. Bridget Hall has worked for The Bedford College Group since 2012, and began her new role as Manager of the Learning Centres in October 2023. Bridget also opened the new Wellingborough site.

Building confidence

Bridget said, “We have certainly come a long way within this past year. Initially, we had three sessions a week and only around ten learners. We now have five sessions a week and forty-six learners!”.

“The Learning Centres provide safe environments to support adults who lack confidence with IT and have a fear of using computers, for example with issues like scams. Courses are taken in a flexible way and our staff make sessions fun and engaging which builds confidence for students.”

When asked about the high pass rates this year, Bridget commented, “We are thrilled with the recent pass rates and this directly reflects the hard work of our staff.”

Helping to combat digital isolation

In January 2025, the Learning Centres will launch a new ‘Basics Computer Skills’ course for individuals who have never used a computer before. This new course will help combat digital isolation within Northamptonshire and help adults to access useful software such as emails and online banking.
