The Early Years Educator CACHE Level 3 Diploma

The aim of this qualification is to prepare learners to become Early Years Educators, enabling them to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years.

Upon achievement of this qualification it is intended that learners will be able to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators. NCFE CACHE have surpassed the minimum requirements set out in the Full and Relevant Criteria to develop a qualification which reflects the priorities of practitioners and employers to meet the needs of young children.

The qualification content meets the Department for Education’s (DfE) Level 3 full and relevant criteria for a Level 3 Early Years Practitioner in the workforce.

Workbased Learning allows students the benefits of gaining a recognised qualification whilst working. All students will have access to an e-portfolio with supporting resources and online lessons as well as the benefit of a one to one allocated assessor on hand to support your learning journey.

Need to know

Entry requirements

You must be at least 16 years old.

You must be volunteering or working in an Early Years Setting.

To be included in ratios once you have completed the qualification, you must hold GCSE English Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent functional skills.

Learners will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement in an early years/childcare setting to show competence in both knowledge and skills. Placement opportunity must allow for skills application with babies and/or young children.

It is recommended that 350 hours placement are completed. You will also be expected to undertake a longitudinal study on a child in the setting.

What qualification will I gain?

You will gain:

  • NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator)

How will I be assessed?

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods including written assignments, observation visits, and professional discussions.

Knowledge based outcomes can be assessed using a variety of assessment tasks including assignment, online learning and activities. Performance and skills-based outcomes must be achieved with reference to a real work environment and will include assessor visits to carry out observations in the workplace.

All assessment methods will be co-ordinated to suit the individual needs of the learner.

Within this qualification, you will complete 23 mandatory units which are structured around the following three themes:

Theme 1: Health and well-being

  • Healthy lifestyles through Food
  • Healthy lifestyles through Exercise
  • Supporting Care Routines
  • Promoting Emotional Wellbeing
  • Supporting children who are unwell

Theme 2: Legislation, frameworks and professional practice

  • Safeguarding and the protection and welfare of children
  • Health and Safety
  • Equality, diversity and inclusive practice
  • Working in Partnership
  • Professional Development

Theme 3: Play, development and learning for school readiness

  • Understanding the value of pay in Early Years
  • Plan, lead and review play opportunities which support children’s learning and development
  • Promoting enabling play environments
  • Developing emergent literacy skills
  • Developing emergent mathematical skills
  • Supporting transitions to school
  • Support development of Cognitive Skills
  • Promote speech, language and communication
  • Promote physical development
  • Promote personal, social and emotional development
  • Support children with additional needs
  • Observation, assessment and planning
  • Longitudinal Study

As you will see within these themes and units, you will gain knowledge and skills of Child Development 0-7 years, how to support play and learning in suitable environments, safeguarding and well-being or children, childhood development theorists and how these are used in practice, observation and assessments, knowledge of the current requirements within Early Years, promoting play in all areas including healthy eating and exercise and the role of an effective key person.

All Learners will need to undertake a Longitudinal Study on a child in their placement and will need to be in a position to observe children.

Upon achievement of this qualification learners will gain their licence to practise and it is intended that learners will be able to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators. Learners who achieve a full and relevant level 3 or above qualification will need to hold a suitable level 2 English qualification in order to count within the adult: child ratios at level 3. In addition, from January 2024, a manager or a learner that starts in a manager role will also need to hold a suitable level 2 maths qualification.

Next steps

Course progression:

Learners can progress to the Level 4 Certificate for the Early Years Advanced Practitioner or other higher-level early years qualifications

Career progressions:

Upon achievement of this qualification learners will gain their licence to practise and it is intended that learners will be able to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators.

Learners can progress into various job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors such as:

  • Assistant in Children’s Centres
  • Practitioner in nursery schools
  • Practitioner in reception classes in primary schools
  • Pre-school worker

Learners who achieve a full and relevant level 3 or above qualification after 1 September 2014 will need to hold a suitable level 2 English qualification in order to count within the adult: child ratios at level 3.

In addition, from January 2024, a manager or a learner that starts in a manager role will also need to hold a suitable level 2 maths qualification.

At an additional cost, all learners complete a Paediatric First Aid Course to be able to be counted in full adult: child ratios.
