Supporting Children and Young People’s Speech, Language and Communication CACHE Level 3 Award

The Level 3 Award in Speech, Language and Communication is aimed to develop a focus on the study of the speech, language and communication needs of children in the children and young people’s sector.

It will offer a breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge of speech and language. It will provide opportunities for learners to acquire and develop practical and technical skills.

The objective of this qualification is to develop the knowledge and the skills necessary for effective communication and how to identify development needs and support for individuals; speech, language and communication skills are essential for learning and social and emotional wellbeing, therefore it’s important that practitioners understand what typical development looks like for different age groups.

It is aimed at learners working with children aged 0-19 years and are in a position to support speech, language and communication needs in children.

Workbased Learning allows students the benefits of gaining a recognised qualification whilst working. All students will have access to an e-portfolio with supporting resources and online lessons as well as the benefit of a one to one allocated assessor on hand to support your learning journey.

Need to know

Entry requirements

Essential:

Learners must be aged 16 or over.

As learners need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, they will need to be working in a setting where they are supporting children and young people between 0-19years old, for example an early years environment, school or college.

What qualification will I gain?

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Award in Supporting Children and Young People’s Speech, Language and Communication.

How will I be assessed?

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods including written assignments, observation visits, and professional discussions.

Knowledge based outcomes can be assessed using a variety of assessment tasks including assignment, online learning and activities. Performance and skills-based outcomes must be achieved with reference to a real work environment and will include assessor visits to carry out observations in the workplace.

All assessment methods will be co-ordinated to suit the individual needs of the learner.

What will I study?

You will study:

This qualification is designed for those who work with children and young people. It provides a professional development opportunity and aims to develop the appropriate knowledge and skills to enable learners to:

  • understand the importance of speech, language and communication
  • identify the signs of those children who are experiencing difficulties
  • promote speech, language and communication development
  • explore ways to support children and young people who have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)

This award provides opportunities for specialist learning for practitioners working in a wide range of occupational settings including:

  • Children and young people
  • Early years
  • Health and social care
  • Playwork
  • Youth work
  • Educational

Within this qualification, Learners will complete 2 mandatory units and 1 optional unit, gaining 9 credits. The units are:

Mandatory Units:

  • Support Speech, Language and Communication Development
  • Support children and young people’s speech, language and communication skills

Choice of 1 Option Unit from:

  • Support speech, language and communication development of children who are learning more than one language
  • Support positive practice with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs
  • Understand the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs
  • Work with parents, families and carers to support their child’s speech, language and communication development

Learners will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement in a school setting to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

Continuing professional development (CPD):

CPD in speech language and communication can lead to an increase in confidence. It can also improve practice and achieve better outcomes for children and young people.

Funding Information

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.

If you are aged 19 or over you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost of this course more affordable.
