Overview

Sports Science (Coaching) Foundation Degree (FdSc) (Full time)

This course will provide you with a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to work in the sport, health and fitness industry as a qualified sports coach.

Within our sports team is a range of subject specialists with Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in a range of sports-related fields. The team also has a range of vocational experience and some are actively engaged with, and working in, the sports industry.

 

Course information

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 32-48 UCAS points (BTEC: Pass Merit Profile) from a Level 3 course (A-Level, Level 3 Diploma or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in a relevant subject area) studied over a two year period.
  • GCSE grade A*-C /9-4 or Level 2 equivalent in English and Maths. Entry is subject to a successful interview. We welcome applications from mature students who will be considered individually on experience rather than qualifications.
Course content

Units you can study on the course will include: employment in the sports industry; management and supervision in the sports industry; fundamentals of sport and exercise psychology; psychology of sport, exercise and health; functional anatomy and physiology; exercise physiology; coaching for participation; sports coaching and performance development.

You will complete work experience and project related units which require the completion of a minimum of 80 hours work experience per year. There is also the opportunity to gain commercially recognised qualifications such as a range of Level 1 Coaching qualifications, as well as a Level 2 award in Coaching Studies.

Assessment methods

You will be continuously assessed throughout the course via practical assessment, coursework and presentations.

Further study and career options

On successful completion of this course you can progress straight on to the third year of a course delivered at the University of Bedfordshire, to achieve a BSc Sport Science Degree. Utilising the knowledge gained from this course you could also go into employment in the sports coaching, fitness, health and performance industries.
