Safe Use of Brush cutters & Strimmers NPTC Level 2 Award

This course is essential for anyone who uses a brushcutter/trimmer in a professional capacity (as part of their normal duties). For example, a grounds maintenance operative or gardener. The course develops practical and theory understanding for how to carry out pre-start checks and maintenance. Selection of cutting heads and operation techniques for brushcutters and trimmers.

Entry requirements

Essential:

You must be 16 years old or over to undertake this course. As this is a short and very intense course, you must be able to proficiently operate powered horticultural machinery used during the training.

What qualification will I gain?

City and Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of brush-cutters and trimmers.

Course content

What will I study?

Areas covered:

The following areas are covered during the course:

  • Know how to carry out a risk assessment
  • Know the health and safety legislation that underpins trimmer and brushcutter operations
  • Know the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for trimmer and brushcutter operations
  • Know the health and safety features of the equipment being used
  • Know how to maintain the trimmer / brushcutter
  • Know how to operate a trimmer / brushcutter
  • Understand different operating techniques
  • Know how to store equipment safely and appropriately

There are two ‘endorsements’ for this qualification:

  • 001 Trimmer
  • 002 Brushcutter
How will I be assessed?

This qualification can be examined by the Trainer who delivered the training. Small groups can be trained and assessed in one day, larger groups trained on day one and assessed on another date.

Assessment can take 1.5 – 3.00 hours and will always be at the venue at which you trained.

Additional information

This course is trained and assessed on site at College, however we are able to offer training and assessment to groups within industry settings following assessment of the facilities. Please contact the business development team to discuss your requirements.

You will be offered the correct PPE for this course (with the exception of safety footwear, which must be supplied by the trainee/candidate). Robust outdoor clothing should be worn, ideally coveralls or a boiler suit.

Any other tools and equipment required will be listed on the joining instructions.  These will be emailed to you a few weeks before the course is due to start – please contact us to confirm you have the required items.
