Psychology & Crime Foundation Degree (FdA) (Full time)This foundation degree provides vocational and practical perspectives on the application of both general and criminal psychology to the understanding of human behaviour, offending and society’s response to offenders. Its overall aim is to help you develop a knowledge base and a range of specialist and transferable skills to enhance your future career aspirations and opportunities.
You will be provided with a critical overview of the well-established and emerging theories, concepts, debates, empirical methods and findings in psychology as well as opportunities to apply those to real-world contexts that relate to the areas in which you have experience of working, or wish to work in the future.
Whilst studying on this course, you will enhance your knowledge, develop strong academic and research skills and prepare to work in professional settings.

Course information
- 32-48 UCAS Points from a Level 3 course (e.g. A-Level, Level 3 Diploma, BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma or equivalent).
- English GCSE at grade C/grade 4 or above OR Level 2 equivalent.
- Maths GCSE at grade C/grade 4 or above OR Level 2 equivalent is desirable.
- Successful interview.
We welcome applicants who may not meet the above entry requirements but have relevant work experience within the industry. You may be asked to attend an interview to discuss the requirements of the course.
You will also need to undertake a paid or voluntary placement in a relevant setting related to psychology and crime (minimum one day per week) for the duration of the course. You should ideally arrange your own placement but the course team will also be able to assist you with this.
This course is delivered in-person at the Bedford College site and involves both scheduled teaching and guided and independent study. You will attend the college one day a week (9:00-18:00) and devote about 30 hours a week engaging in wider reading, guided and independent learning as well as research. You will be assessed through a range of methods and receive regular verbal and written feedback on your progress and the quality of your work.
As part of the course, you will be required to complete a placement of 100 hours a year in a course-relevant setting.
The course is enhanced with relevant trips, guest lectures and visits, and you will be strongly encouraged to participate in events and activities designed to enrich your learning experience and prepare you for the next steps in your educational and/or professional journey.
During this course you will study a range of units including: foundation to psychology; comparative youth justice; work-based learning; study skills and social research; social and lifespan development; professional research and development in psychology; crime and social control.
You will be assessed through coursework, essays, reports, proposals, projects, presentations, and exams.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Foundation Degree of Arts in Psychology and Crime.
Following successful completion of your Foundation Degree, you will be able to progress (top-up) to the third year of an Honours degree course to achieve a Psychology & Criminal Behaviour BA (Hons) – there are also other top-up options available.
While most recommended readings are available through Bedford College’s and University of Bedfordshire’s libraries, some students opt to purchase their own copies of the textbooks. The course does not require any specialist equipment or uniforms although small contributions towards trips and events may be needed.
