Overview
Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides (PA1) Level 2If your job involves applying pesticides in a commercial role then you are legally required by the Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations (2012) to take the PA1 qualification.
You will need to undertake the foundation module (PA1) plus a relevant application module (i.e. PA2, PA3, PA4, PA6). The PA1 on its own is not a recognised certificate of competence.

What will I study?
Areas covered:
This is the foundation module only that places a strong emphasis upon using and handling pesticides safely. This course will cover:
- Legislation
- Personal safety and contamination
- Pesticide & Container Storage
- Record keeping
- Label information
- Operator responsibilities
- Container and packaging disposal
- Environmental and wildlife consideration
- Emergency procedures
To successfully achieve this course, you will need to complete and pass the City & Guilds E-volve test which is a multiple-choice online exam.
How will I be assessed?
This course is delivered over 1 day with the online exam taking place at the end of the day.
Next steps
Successful completion is a condition of entry to the other pesticide application modules (i.e. PA2, PA3, PA4, PA6).
Additional information
There are no prerequisites for this course.
You should bring suitable clothing for pesticide application including spray suit, steel toe-capped boots.
You will be required to read chemical manufactures leaflets and undertake an online examination.
NPTC regulations do not allow candidates to have a reader for the exam.
