Pre-Access to Higher Education

The Pre-Access course is ideal if you would like to enter the Access to Higher Education course but haven’t got the necessary GCSE grades. It is suited to adults who have been out of education for some time and who need to re-learn how to study at a higher level before progressing onto the intensive Access programme.

Course Information

Entry requirements

You will need to be over 19yrs old and already have either a level 1 (GCSE D) in maths and English or be working at that level. You will be invited to attend an interview where you will need to sit a maths and English test. Also you will need to have researched the type of career you would like to work towards, and discuss this at an information session where you have the opportunity to meet the staff. You will also need to be able to use IT to word process your work and be able to save and manage your files. You may wish to sign up for IT course at our Learning Centre before starting the course.

Course content

You will study Level 2 English and/or maths. You will study for up to 10 hours per week (2 days) depending on the subjects you require to progress onto the Access course. You will also study an OCNWM Level 2 Certificate in Skills for Further Study in Health course to prepare you for your Access course. All students will also attend an Academic Skills Tutorial each week.

Further study and career options

This programme leads directly into the Access course. Areas available for study on this programme are Humanities, Health, Science and Social Sciences. Both the Pre-Access and Access courses are designed to lead to further university study.

Assessment methods

Course assessment is carried out through a variety of methods, including essays, projects, presentations and final exams.

Additional information

In order for learners to progress on to an undergraduate degree at a British university, it is essential that you have achieved a Level 2 in English and maths of a grade C in maths and English (and Science if you wish to train as a primary school Teacher). Learners intending to study Science based subjects, or Midwifery, will need a B (or equivalent) in Science to meet university requirements.

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.

For this Pre-Access course there will be an additional £30 resource fee to study each Functional Skills subject. This £30 fee covers your registration & certification with the awarding body. You will also receive a core text book for your subject. The fee is only paid once (per subject) and will cover you if you need to re-sit the exam for any reason.

Funding Information

If you are aged 19 or over you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost of this course more affordable.
