Motor Vehicle Maintenance Intermediate (Level 2)This study programme which combines classroom based knowledge with practical tasks and modules, is suited to the needs of the motor industry, thus allowing the student to comprehend vital elements of motor vehicle technology.
This Diploma is ideal for learners aged 16+ who enjoy a practical environment, are interested in the light vehicle maintenance and wish to develop and broaden their experience at a level suiting their ability.

Need to know
Entry requirements
The entry requirements are 3 x GCSE grades 3 or above (ideally including maths & English language) or Functional Skills qualifications in Maths & English at Level 1.
However, selection for entry will take into account each applicant’s existing academic/vocational qualifications, experience, and interest in working in the industry sectors.
How will I be assessed?
The assessments for this qualification have a practical focus and combine various assessment styles/methodologies in order to suit the subject and levels of units contained within it.
As part of all units there is a mixture of practical, written and online (multi-choice) exams.
Course content
What will I study?
The qualification’s combination of units allow learners to develop their knowledge and skills in:
- Routine light vehicle maintenance & Inspection
- Removing and replacing engine units and components
- Removing and replacing fuel, ignition, air and exhaust systems
- Removing and replacing transmission and driveline units and components
- Health and safety and good house keeping in the automotive environment
- Support for job roles in the automotive environment
- ·Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment
Next steps
Course and Career Progression:
This Diploma is ideal for those learners who wish to undertake a qualification which will support their progress into the retail motor vehicle industry or onto a Level 3 Qualification.
It can also supplement their progress to other appropriate destinations, such as the Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3, or employment.

All full-time Level 1 and Level 2 courses are now FREE for everyone, whatever their age. If you are looking to study a Level 3 qualification, courses might still be free if you’re under 19 or 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification.
