We offer Level 1 qualification courses in the three main types of welding; MIG, TIG and MMA. Students are only able to study one unit at a time however all 3 units can be completed within 1 year of study.

Course information

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements; just an interest in welding.

Course content

This course is a great introduction to the key aspects of MMA welding. By the end of the programme you will be able to set up the welding equipment, change wire, gases and electrodes and produce basic welds in flat and horizontal positions. There is also a key focus on how to work safely in a welding environment.

Assessment methods

The course is assessed through 5 welded test pieces and a short written exam.

Further study and career options

Successful students are able to progress onto our NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Welding.

Additional information

Students are required to wear strong boots and overalls during all workshop sessions. Other protective equipment will be provided.

Funding Information

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.

If you are aged 19 or over you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost of this course more affordable.
