Land & Wildlife Advanced (Level 3)

This study programme includes units to give students the practical and theoretical knowledge required for employment in the countryside management sector and is designed to prepare you for a middle management role or those that wish to progress onto a higher education qualification in conservation, ecology or another science based degree.

You will also carry out duties maintaining the College countryside facilities where students will develop their knowledge alongside their practical skills.

Need to know

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grades 9- 4 OR equivalent.

Duration: 2 Years

Year 1  -you will complete the Technical Diploma in Land and Wildlife Management (Countryside) qualification.

Year 2 – you will complete Technical Extended Diploma in Land and Wildlife Management (Countryside) qualification.

What qualification will I gain?
  • On completion of the two years you will be awarded City and Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land and Wildlife Management (Countryside) qualification.
  • Plus English and Maths qualifications if required.
  • You can also gain up to 168 UCAS points for the Extended Diploma
How will I be assessed?

You will be continually assessed as the study programme progresses using a variety of methods, including presentations, case studies, assignments, practical assessments and externally set exams.

Work experience

You will be required to find a work placement in both year 1 and 2 of the study programme to achieve the industry experience unit.

Course content

What will I study?

Year 1: during the first year of your study programme you will cover ten of the following units

Mandatory units

  • Principles of Health and Safety
  • Undertake and review work related experience in the land based industries
  • Land based industry machinery operations
  • Population surveys, ecology and conservation
  • Countryside recreation
  • Undertake estate skills

Specialist units

  • Game Bird Production
  • Woodland Habitat Management
  • Fresh water and Wetland Management
  • River Fisheries Creation

Year 2: during the second year of your study programme you will cover ten of the following units

Mandatory units

  • Principles of physical and biological environmental processes
  • Ecology and Concepts and Application
  • Environmental Interpretation in the Land based Sector
  • Undertake a Specialist Project in the Land Based Sector
  • Pest and Predator Control
  • Principles of Tree Felling and Chainsaw Use
  • Undertake Grassland Habitat Management

Optional units

  • Aquatics Welfare and Breed Development
  • Plant and Soil Science
  • Adventurous Activity Leadership

English and maths:

If you don’t already have GCSE English and maths grade 9-4, we will work with you to help you develop your maths and English skills.

Next steps

Learners completing this level 3 qualification will be able to progress onto a Higher education degree in Ecology, conservation or wildlife studies.

Additional information

A number of trips will be organised in the UK and abroad, and you will also have the opportunity to enter local competitions and work closely with regional and national companies.

The College works closely with the local community and employers to give you the experience of the working environment.

All full-time Level 1 and Level 2 courses are now FREE for everyone, whatever their age. If you are looking to study a Level 3 qualification, courses might still be free if you’re under 19 or 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification.
