I’ve loved brushing and styling people’s hair from a young age. After studying Catering for a year at College, I made the move to Hairdressing and I’m really enjoying it.
College is a big step up from school but it’s a very safe environment where you have more time to think about things. In the practical sessions we work with different hair types and colours, and the theory sessions support this with lessons on colour correction and the different ways to colour hair.
The practical sessions also include cutting hair. We start on mannequin heads and then after a few weeks move on to modelling for each other before working with real clients who come into the salon a couple of times a week.
Our tutors are very helpful and they will always come round and double check you are ok while you’re working.
We also have business workshops and a work experience placement once a week. I work at a salon in Burton Latimer where I get to apply all the skills I’ve learned in College, from timings and preparing the salon, to colouring and cutting. We’ve also been to Salon International in London and will soon have a speaker from the industry come in to talk to us about colour correction.
Once I finish this course I am going to move on to the Barbering course to expand my skill set. Eventually, I’d love to work as a Hairdresser on a cruise ship so I can travel the world while I work.
