What qualification will I gain?
You will gain two qualifications at the end of the course:
- NVQ level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing
- VRQ level 1 Certificate in an introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
How will I be assessed?
- A mix of multiple choice exams and written assignments
- along with practical assessments on paying clients

NVQ Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing covers:
- Assisting colour removal
- Assisting with reception
- Blow-drying hair
- Shampoo and condition hair
- Prepare work areas for services
VRQ Level 1 Certificate covers:
- Working in the hair and beauty industry
- Professional image
- Skin Care
- Hand Care
- Nail Art
- Create an Image
Next steps
Course progression:
Once completed you have the choice of the following level 2 courses:
- Level 2 Hairdressing
- Level 2 Beauty Therapy
- Level 2 Barbering
- Level 2 Apprenticeship (depending on GCSE maths and English results)
Career progressions:
Level 2 apprenticeship.

Funding Information
All full-time Level 1 and Level 2 courses are now FREE for everyone, whatever their age. If you are looking to study a Level 3 qualification, courses might still be free if you’re under 19 or 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification.
