Entry requirements

Essential: Learners should have achieved qualifications in English and mathematics at grade 4 or above at GCSE or equivalent.

Your experience in the workplace and current role will be discussed at interview to determine if the Level 3 or Level 5 is most appropriate for you.

The CMI Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management and Leadership is designed to provide a broad base of knowledge and skills for aspiring or newly appointed supervisors and team leaders who want to develop essential management skills while working.

The course focuses on practical, work-based knowledge such as leading teams, improving communication, managing performance, and understanding operational planning. Learners gain a recognised professional qualification from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), helping to boost confidence, enhance career progression, and improve effectiveness in a first-line management role. The part-time delivery allows students to balance study alongside work and personal commitments, with a strong emphasis on applying learning directly to real workplace situations.

Course content

The course covers a wide range of business management skills and knowledge, including organisational performance, interpersonal skills and personal effectiveness.

You will study the following two units:

  • Unit 330 – Organisational Awareness for First Line Managers
  • Unit 331 – Approaches to Managing and Leading People and Teams

Next steps

Upon successful completion of their qualification, learners are able to complete additional units to ‘top-up’ to the more comprehensive and extensive CMI Level 3 Diploma in First Line Management.

All successful learners will be eligible for Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) on completion of the Level 3 Qualifications in First Line Management and Leadership (subject to retention of CMI Membership). Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) is a professional status designed to help you stand out from the competition and start your management career journey with all the benefits of CMI membership to support you.

Learners may also wish to further their ongoing personal and professional development by accessing other CMI qualifications, such as the CMI Level 5 Qualifications in Management and Leadership with the goal of becoming a Chartered Manager.

Learners who are aspiring to a management role may progress to the job roles such as:

  • Team Leader
  • Supervisor
