English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for Adult students

These courses are offered at Bedford College and at Tresham College’s Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough Campuses. ESOL courses will help you to improve your English for work, everyday life or further study.

There are seven levels to start from, depending upon your existing skills:

  • Pre-Entry
  • Beginners (Entry Level 1)
  • Elementary (Entry Level 2)
  • Lower Intermediate (Entry Level 3)
  • Intermediate (Entry Level 3/Level 1)
  • Higher Intermediate (Level 1)
  • and Advanced (Level 2)

Bedford College
Courses at Bedford College are 4 hours per week delivered on various days. You can choose from 09:15-11:15, 11:30-13:30, 14:15-16:15 and 18:30-20:30

Tresham College
Courses at Tresham College are offered during the day 9:15- 12:30 & evening 18.00-21.00 across multiple sites (Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough). Saturday courses are also offered at our Kettering Adult Learning Centre from 9.15am – 12.30pm & 1.15pm – 4.30.

ESOL & ESSENTIAL DIGITAL SKILLS: IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH AND DIGITAL SKILLS AT THE SAME TIME!

Beginner + (Pre-Entry-Entry 1+) – 9.15am – 12.30pm

Pre-Intermediate + (Entry 3 – Level 2) – 1.15 – 4.30pm

End date: Saturday 21 June 2025

Free Essential Digital Skills Qualifications for ESOL Learners at Corby Learning Centre

Entry 3 & Level 1 – Thursdays from 1.45 – 2.45pm.

Start date: September 12 2024

End date: June 19 2025

Course information

Need to know

Entry requirements:

You do not need any qualifications to start, but you must be a UK/EEA resident to qualify for ESOL funding. If you are an international student, you can still enrol on this course, but will not have access to funding and you will have to pay the full cost of the course.

You will need to attend a free assessment before you start to help decide which level is best for you.

Course content

What will I study?

You will study a range of topics to improve your skills in:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Grammar
  • ILT (using computers).

You will also learn about Health, Education, Local Government, and British Values and other topics, which are all part of being a citizen in the UK.

Additional information

You will work towards the English Speaking Board awards and certificates in Skills for Life ESOL at an appropriate level.

You will then be able to take the following tests when you are ready:

  • Speaking & Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

Attendance

If you are attending Tresham College you will need to attend College for a minimum of three hours per week during the morning, afternoon or evening.

If you are attending Bedford College you will need to attend College for a minimum of four hours per week during the morning, afternoon or evening.

Pay by instalments

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.

Adult Bursary 

You can apply for the Adult Learner Bursary which may help with the cost of your course.
