OverviewEnglish for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for Adult students
These courses are offered at Bedford College and at Tresham College’s Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough Campuses. ESOL courses will help you to improve your English for work, everyday life or further study.
There are seven levels to start from, depending upon your existing skills:
- Beginners (Entry Level 1)
- Elementary (Entry Level 2)
- Lower Intermediate (Entry Level 3)
- Intermediate (Entry Level 3/Level 1)
- Higher Intermediate (Level 1)
- and Advanced (Level 2)
Courses at Bedford College are 4 hours per week delivered on various days. You can choose from 09:15-11:15, 11:30-13:30, 14:15-16:15 and 18:30-20:30
Course at Tresham College are offered during the day 9:15- 12:30 & evening 18.00-21.00 across multiple sites (Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough).

Need to know
You do not need any qualifications to start, but you must be a UK/EEA resident to qualify for ESOL funding. If you are an international student, you can still enrol on this course, but will not have access to funding and you will have to pay the full cost of the course.
You will need to attend a free assessment before you start to help decide which level is best for you.
What will I study?
You will study a range of topics to improve your skills in:
- ILT (using computers).
You will also learn about Health, Education, Local Government, and British Values and other topics, which are all part of being a citizen in the UK.
You will work towards the English Speaking Board awards and certificates in Skills for Life ESOL at an appropriate level.
You will then be able to take the following tests when you are ready:
- Speaking & Listening
You will need to attend College for a minimum of four hours per week during the morning, afternoon or evening.
Pay by instalments
The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.
