Engineering Advanced (Level 3)

The course will cover many aspects of engineering and allow you to study both in the classroom and the workshops giving you the necessary theoretical and practical skills to start your engineering career.

This is a well-respected qualification that provides routes into engineering careers via Higher Education or apprenticeships.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs Grade 9-4 to include English, maths and Science.

The qualification

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Engineering.

Assessment methods

  • 1 unit externally assessed by examination
  • 2 units externally assessed by project and practical work
  • 12 units assessed internally, with, for example coursework
  • assignment presentations

You will study: 15 units

Mandatory units:

  • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely
  • Engineering Product Design & Manufacture
  • Applied Commercial & Quality
  • A Specialist Engineering Project
  • Microcontroller Systems
  • Calculus

  • Manufacturing & Secondary Machining

What skills will I gain?

An understanding of practical engineering techniques and the scientific theories that underpin many areas of engineering.

Next steps

Success in the BTEC National will gain the learner UCAS points dependent on final grade.

This could allow access onto the HNC course at Corby or another HE course at a different institution.

Some BTEC units map across to some apprenticeships in engineering.

Previous learners have progressed to University, Higher Education courses at Tresham and local and national apprenticeships.

Costs/equipment

  • learners need to provide their own stationery and a scientific calculator
  • for workshop sessions they need safety boots and flameproof overalls
