Overview
Engineering Advanced (Level 3)This course provides a Certificate studying general Engineering in Year 1 before specialising in either Mechanical or Electrical/Electronic Engineering to complete an Extended Diploma in Year 2.
It is designed as an entry point for those looking to study Engineering and allows progression to a range of pathways.
The Extended Diploma is a nationally recognised qualification equivalent in size to 3 A levels and allows progression to Higher Education or maps into various apprenticeship standards. Learners will be introduced to a range of Engineering subjects and concepts in Year 1 allowing them to choose their preferred specialism for Year 2. Lessons take place in specialist labs and workshops delivered by highly qualified engineering staff.

Essential:
- Grade 4 GCSE in Maths, English, Science plus one other subject
or
- Level 2 Diploma in Engineering plus GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4
Desirable:
GCSE Physics and higher paper for GCSE Maths

- Year 1 – Engineering Advanced Level 3 BTEC Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
- Year 2 – Engineering Advanced Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
Assessment methods
Continuous assessment throughout the year through practical and written assignments.
Course content
What will I study?
Year 1 – Mechanical Principles, Principles and Applications of Electronic Circuits and Devices, Environmental Engineering and Sustainability, Electronic Measurement and Testing, Engineering Drawing, Electrical and Electronic Principles, Mathematics for Engineers, Health and Safety, Communications for Engineers
Skills gained
Technical knowledge, creating and interpreting engineering drawings, understanding manufacturing techniques, engineering maths and science, principles of engineering systems, developing engineering solutions.
Next steps
Course progression:
After successful completion of the Certificate in year 1 you can progress onto the second year to gain the Extended Diploma in either Electrical/Electronic or Mechanical Engineering.
The Extended Diploma allows progression to HNC and HND in Engineering at the College or Degree level courses at University. Learners can also go straight into industry and use the qualification as part of an apprenticeship in Engineering in various different sectors.

All full-time Level 1 and Level 2 courses are now FREE for everyone, whatever their age. If you are looking to study a Level 3 qualification, courses might still be free if you’re under 19 or 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification.
