The Level 4 HNC lays the foundation of higher learning in electrical engineering. This develops and strengthens core skills while preparing students for specialist subjects at Level 5,or to enter employment. Students will gain competence in a range of subject-specific and general skills and qualities relevant to key areas of engineering.

Entry requirements

Essential entry criteria:

32-48 UCAS points.

Maths and English language GCSE Grade 4.

  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma with an overall grade of Merit or above, or
  • A Levels in Maths and Physics achieving grade C or above, or
  • Level 3 T Level in Engineering with overall Merit or above

Entry may also be gained to the course based on suitable industry experience or alternative qualifications to be determined at interview.

Course content

This HNC is specifically designed for students wishing to progress in electrical engineering.

It has a range of units focussed on electrical engineering with an emphasis on Power. It provides a good grounding in Engineering whilst providing a specialism at higher level. All units are supported by industry experienced staff in purpose built labs extensively equipped for this subject area.

Various trips to support modules may be offered throughout the year dependant on company availability. Previous trips have included manufacturers, automation plants and power stations.

The qualification

Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering for England.

Assessment methods

Written assignment, in class time constrained assessments (written and multiple choice), presentation, practical observation.

Further study and career options

This course allows progression to a Level 5 HND in Engineering, or may allow entry to the second year of a degree program.

Additional costs

There are no additional mandatory costs once enrolled, however the team may recommend text books and equipment that students could purchase to practice at home.
