Education & Childcare Assisting Teaching T Level

The Education & Childcare T Level is a blend of technical knowledge and work placement to provide the skills and experience you need to work in the Primary Education workforce. The two-year qualification brings classroom and work placement together, on a course designed with employers, giving you a route into the Primary Education sector. You will explore child development, childhood theories, theories in application to primary education and learning and how to support the teacher in the primary education classroom. There is an industry placement requirement that compliments the course content and enables you to be prepared for successful completion of the T Level and progression opportunities.

Course information

Entry requirements

To begin this study programme you will need:

4 GCSEs grades 9-4 including English and Maths OR equivalent qualification at Level 2 including English and Maths will be considered.

Entry will also be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

T Level courses are for 16-18 year olds who have completed their GCSEs. If you are 19+ and interested in a course relating to Primary Education, please contact us.

Course content

The objectives of this qualification are to equip students with:

  • The core knowledge and core skills relevant to Education and Early Years
  • Up to date occupational knowledge and skills that have continued currency amongst employers and others
  • The necessary English, mathematics and digital skills
  • Threshold competence that meets employer expectations and is as close to full occupational competence as possible
  • Opportunities to manage and improve their own performance.

During the study programme you will explore at great depth a variety of topics, concepts and complex theory relating to primary education to prepare you for further study or excellence in a role in assisting teaching.

Examples of topics, concepts and theory explored:

  • Support the class teacher to enhance children’s education, individually and in groups
  • Plan, provide and review educational opportunities in collaboration with teachers and other adults
  • Safeguard and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of children and young people
  • Recognise, adapt and respond to individual children’s needs, including those with SEND, to support development and access to the curriculum.

During the study programme you will attend industry placement up to two days a week with further block placements throughout the year. Industry placements are intended to provide you with further opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for skilled employment in industry.

As part of your study programme, you will take part in enrichment opportunities, including a variety of trips, to support the development of knowledge, skills and behaviour to prepare you for progression to Higher Education or industry roles.

Industry placement

During the study programme you will attend industry placement in a primary school up to two days a week with further block placements throughout the year. Industry placements are intended to provide you with further opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for skilled employment in industry.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed though a variety of methods throughout the duration of the course, with exam based assessments at the end of each year. In addition to this, you will be assessed through observations of your practice in the industry placement.

Further study and career options

Course progression:

The T Level provides you with a number of progression options including access to Higher Education to study a relevant degree such as Primary Education or direct access to employment in an assisting teaching role.

Additional information

A mandatory payment for compulsory trips and events  that support your learning will be required at the start of your course. This will be a maximum of £75 per year.
