Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems (BPEC)

This course has been developed to enable Plumbing and Heating engineers to demonstrate their competence in the:

  • Design, installation, service and maintenance of vented and unvented hot water systems
  • Understanding of vented and unvented hot water system design and installation requirements as they relate to building and water regulations
  • Temperature control in open and unvented hot water systems

This course is aimed at primarily at practising plumbing and heating engineers who have an understanding of the fundamental requirements of hot and cold-water systems and central heating systems.

Course information

You must hold a recognised trade qualification at NVQ Level 2 or have evidence of a number of years working in the plumbing industry.

At the end of the course the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the requirements of section G3 of the building regulations relating to the design, installation, service and maintenance hot water systems and how to comply with the regulations.
  • Understand the requirements of the Water Regulations/Bylaws in relation to hot water systems
  • Identify faults associated with the installation or maintenance of hot water systems
  • Understand the retirements of Part L1 of the Building Regulations detailing Conversation of Fuel and Power as they relate to the design, installation and service and maintenance of hot water systems
  • Understand the application of Part P of the building Regulations in relation to the installation of hot water systems
  • Undertake a range of assessments tests to confirm their competence in the installation, service and maintenance of hot water systems

The assessment comprises of the following:

  • An open-book multiple choice assessment
  • A closed-book written assessment
  • A practical fault-finding task
  • And where necessary additional oral questions may be asked by the assessor

On certification of competence, you will be able to join a Competent Persons Scheme for the self-certification of unvented hot water storage systems.

If you choose not to join a Competent Persons Scheme you will need to notify your Building Control Department of the installation before commencing work.
