Craft Carpentry and Joinery (ST0263) Level 3 Apprenticeship ( Pathway 2- Advanced Architectural Joiner)

This occupation is found in both the new build and refurbishment construction sector. The construction industry is central to creating the homes, schools, hospitals, energy and transport infrastructure society needs.

There is growing demand for carpenters and joiners to help meet the need for new homes.

Expected duration

18 months.

College attendance

Bedford College: Block release 2 weeks
Tresham College Corby: Corby Day release

College day release intakes

September and January however you will be able to start the work based learning element at any time throughout the year.

When can the apprentice start employment?

When offered job role and start date agreed with employer.

When can the apprenticeship training start?

As soon as Apprentice starts employment. Arrangements will be made to start apprenticeship and college delivery.

Course content
  • The principles of environment, health, safety and welfare and how they must be applied in relation to their work and to others. eg electrical safety, storage of materials, accident & emergency procedures.
  • How to communicate and work with others effectively in the workplace.
  • The characteristics, quality, uses, sustainability, limitations and defects associated with timber and timber-based products and components, such as hardwood, softwood, MDF and other materials. The different energy efficiency and sustainable materials for construction
  • Craft Architectural Joiner (AAJ): the characteristics, quality, uses and limitations of relevant materials including timber, glass, laminates, finishing’s (paint, stains, lacquers).
  • The different defects associated with relevant raw materials, the different types of ironmongery products associated with architectural joinery including locks, handles etc
  • Component performance requirements including the U-value and security requirements for doors and windows in accordance with current building and CE marking regulations, the requirements for fire doors in accordance with current building regulations, the requirements for stairs in accordance with current building regulations  advanced architectural joinery technology including the purpose and capabilities of software programmes used for architectural joinery work, how to use CAD to produce drawings and the process for programming, setting up and operating
  • Fire door safety course
Entry requirements

Grade requirements

  • Level 2 Functional Skills Maths and English
  • GCSE grade 4 and above Maths and English

Other requirements

Essential:

  • Level 1 Equivalent or Grade 3 and above Maths and English

Desirable:

  • Level 1 Equivalent or Grade 3 and above Maths and English
What training is required in the workplace?
  • Learning a variety of skills to enable the apprentice to be able to develop and complete their Apprenticeship and EPA
  • 80% of training to be completed in the workplace
  • 20% off the job training
  • College attendance
  • Regular 10/12/week Meetings with Training Coordinator and Apprentice to discuss progress and set SMART targets throughout apprenticeships
Further study and career options

Career progression:

On completion of this standard, apprentice will progress to a wide range of employment opportunities, or move onto full or part-time further education. The achievement of this standard will meet the requirement of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Advanced Skilled Worker’ standard, which is widely recognised as a ‘licence to operate’ in a skilled construction trade.
