Counselling Skills Introduction CPCAB Level 2 AwardThis course provides you with the opportunity to learn some basic counselling skills and experience counselling skills training.
Prospective students must be aware that they need to:
- Have good English and literacy skills (GCSE level)
- Have access to a laptop or computer and a printer
- Be able to upload documents on to an electronic system
- Produce a 500–550-word journal each week on a Word document
- Carry out tutor and peer observed role play scenarios each week
- Have sufficient handwriting skills to make detailed and extensive notes in class and role play work
- Be prepared to share aspects of yourself in groups

Entry requirements
This exciting course is suitable for vocational students and returners to education, and provides a foundation for progressive counselling courses. No previous qualifications are required to start. Students between the ages of 16-18 years of age cannot enrol on this course.
What qualification will I gain?
Counselling Skills Introduction Level 2 Award.
How will I be assessed?
Tutor delivery of course material, tutor role modelling, peer feedback and self reflection. You will be assessed throughout the course through a written learning record and skills observation. This will include an internal assessment and an external self-review assessment.
Course content
What will I study?
During the course you will cover topics including:
- Why people come to counselling
- What counselling is
- Theories of counselling
- Counselling skills
- Active listening
- Role play involving counsellor, client and observer
Additional information
This is a part-time course delivered over 10 weeks. There is an additional cost of £20 for a textbook. From week three, you will be expected to do role-play every week.

Funding Information
The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.
If you are aged 19 or over you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost of this course more affordable.
