Construction Design, Surveying and Planning,(T Level Foundation Year)

The purpose of the T Level Foundation Year is a 16-19 study programme specifically designed to develop the skills, experience, knowledge and behaviours to support progression onto the Design Surveying and Planning T Level. It is a one-year programme aimed at young people who are not ready to start a T Level but have the potential to progress onto one.

Why study?

The T Level Foundation Year consists of five components and is tailored to the needs of the individual student. It is designed to provide learners with the skills, experience, knowledge and behaviours needed for progression whilst gaining a recognised qualification.

Course information

Need to know

Entry requirements:

English and maths at grade 2 and above.

What qualification will I gain?

Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment.

How will I be assessed?

Some of the assessment methods that could be used are:

  • work-based projects
  • written assignments
  • reports
  • documents
  • planning documents
  • design documents
  • solutions to construction problems through discourse and/or calculation
  • presentations
  • role plays supported by an observer’s statement and/or video evidence
  • portfolios
  • reflective statements
  • production of artefacts
  • work logbooks
  • witness statements.

Course content

What will I study?

1. English or/and maths

Students who did not achieve English and/or maths GCSE grade 4 at Key Stage 4 will be supported in achieving their GCSE qualification in both of these subjects by the end of the programme.

2. Work preparation and employability skills.

Students will develop the skills, behaviours, attitude, and confidence that will be needed for students to complete the T Level Industry Placement. This will include high quality work experience, and work preparation and employability skills development.

3. Introductory technical skills

The core component provides a broad understanding of the construction industry and covers the following construction-related topics:

  • Health and safety
  • Science, measurement and building technology
  • Information, data and digital technology
  • Construction mathematical techniques
  • Design and sustainability
  • Construction and the built environment
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Modern Methods of Construction

What skills will I gain?

  • Computer Aided Design
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Offsite Manufacturing Skills
  • Measurement and estimating skill
