BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering for England

The purpose of Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Civil Engineering for England is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. 32 – 48  UCAS points and English Language and maths GCSE grade 4 or above.

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction, Civil Engineering or Building Services

Assessment methods

Just as variety of teaching is important to the planning of a programme structure, so too is the use of a range of assessment tools appropriate to the unit and its content.

Some of the assessment methods that could be used are:

  • work-based projects
  • written assignments – reports – briefing documents – planning documents – design documents – solutions to construction problems through discourse and/or calculation
  • presentations, vivas, role plays supported by an observer’s statement and/or video evidence
  • portfolios
  • reflective statements
  • production of artefacts
  • work logbooks
  • witness statements.

Further study and career options

Course progression: 

Level 5 HND (Higher National Diploma): The most direct academic progression is to continue with a Level 5 HND in Civil Engineering or Construction and the Built Environment. This builds on the HNC and deepens technical and theoretical knowledge 

 Top-Up Degree (Level 6): Upon completing the HND, students can progress to the final year of a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, depending on the university and the alignment of modules. 

Career progression: 

Graduates can pursue roles such as Civil Engineering Technician, Site Engineer, CAD Technician, or Construction Supervisor, with experience, they may progress to positions like Project Manager, Structural Engineer, or Highways Engineer

What trips / work placements or opportunities for extra curriculum activities are there on the course? 

As part of the course, a series of trips and site visits will be organised to enhance students’ understanding of real-world civil engineering practices. These visits will provide valuable exposure to active construction sites, allowing learners to observe industry operations, engage with professionals, and relate classroom theory to practical applications.
