Competence in Manually Fed Wood Chippers NPTC Level 2 Certificate

The qualification is aimed at those who use wood chippers as part of their work, either in horticulture, arboriculture or forestry. This covers the use of manually fed wood chippers, covering pre-use checks and maintenance, identification of controls and instruments, operating the machine to chip material appropriate to the capacity of the machine, and hitching and unhitching of the machine. 

What you need to do: complete a practical test with one to one verbal questioning.

Entry requirements

You must be 16 years old or over to undertake this course.

As this is a short and very intense course, you must be able to proficiently prepare and operate machinery used during the training.

Competence in Manually Fed Wood Chippers NPTC Level 2 Certificate.

Course content

This course is designed for any person employed in arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, landscaping and grounds maintenance who is or will be required to operate wood chippers.

What will I study?

Area covered

  • Know the health and safety requirements for operating a wood chipper
  • Be able to carry out a risk assessment on a site
  • Be able to prepare the equipment and site for wood chipping operations
  • Be able to operate a wood chipper
  • Carry out maintenance on a wood chipper
How will I be assessed?

The course is an integrated practical assessment where you are required to pass the five assessment activities covered by the formal teaching. You will also need to demonstrate a level of practical performance and explain under pinning knowledge.

Additional information

This course is trained and assessed on site at College, however we are able to offer training and assessment to groups within industry settings following assessment of the facilities. Please contact the business development team to discuss your requirements.

You will be offered the correct PPE for this course (with the exception of safety footwear, which must be supplied by the trainee/candidate). Robust outdoor clothing should be worn, ideally coveralls or a boiler suit.

Any other tools and equipment required will be listed on the joining instructions. These will be emailed to you a few weeks before the course is due to start – please contact us to confirm you have the required items.

Funding Information

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.

If you are aged 19 or over you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost of this course more affordable.
