Chainsaw Maintenance & Crosscutting NPTC Level 2 Award Refresher (CS30)A chainsaw refresher training course is designed for individuals who have previously completed chainsaw training and need to update their skills and knowledge, especially in areas like maintenance and cross-cutting.
These courses are typically recommended every 3-5 years for professional users to stay current with best practices and safety regulations.
This is a hands-on course that delivers both practical skills and health and safety guidance as well as demonstrating that you and your employer have completed sufficient training to meet the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Need to know
Entry requirements
Essential: Previous certification in chainsaw maintenance and cross cutting.
Qualification gained:
CPD based certificate of attendance for refresher training in Chainsaw Maintenance and cross cutting.
Assessment methods
Re- assessment following completion of the training element.
Course content
You will study:
- HSE legislation and safety guidelines
- Overview of the chainsaw and maintenance equipment
- Maintaining the saw chain
- Maintaining the guide bar
- Power unit maintenance
- Starting the chainsaw and pre-cutting tests
- Cross-cutting timber.
Skills gained
Our instructors will guide you through a balanced mix of theoretical and practical sessions.
You’ll work on a number of appropriate techniques and safety guidelines. Key maintenance issues will be covered.
You’ll also go over cross-cutting, handling and stacking timber.
Additional information
Equipment needed
You will be required to supply your own suitable PPE including: steel toe capped boots, chainsaw trousers, gloves and helmet. You are able to bring your own chainsaw or you can hire a college machine.
