Beauty Therapy Intermediate (Level 2)

This professional study programme will equip you with the skills you need to carry out a range of beauty therapy treatments to a nationally recognised standard.

This Level 2 study programme will focus on the development of the underlying principles and practical skills required in the beauty therapy industry, and will prepare you for progression into industry. You will learn how to consult with clients, promote products and services, along with developing a variety of skills and techniques.

Gaining this qualification will provide better employment opportunities to work in the industry. We offer a high street salon experience with external clients for assessments building skills and confidence.

Entry requirements

Duration: 1 year

  • 3 GCSEs grades 9–3 ideally including English & maths

OR

  • Beauty Therapy and/or Hairdressing at Level 1

Duration: 2 years

  • 3 GCSEs grades 9–1, ideally including English & maths and a keen interest in beauty therapy
  • Other relevant levels of qualification or experience will be considered
What qualification will I gain?

City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy.

Plus English and maths skills if required.

What will I study?
Year 1
Year 2

The programme introduces both hairdressing and beauty therapy skills and is designed for people who wish to prepare for further training in the hair and beauty sector.

You will study:

  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image in a salon
  • Basic make-up application
  • Providing basic manicure treatment
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas
  • Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
  • Blow dry hair
  • Shampoo and condition hair
  • Assist with hair colouring and lightening services
  • Plait and twist hair using basic techniques

  • Practical skills in hairdressing and beauty therapy

  • Confidence working with people

On gaining the qualification students will be able to decide which path to focus on at Level 2; either hairdressing or beauty therapy.

You will study:

  • Working in beauty related industries
  • Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Client care and communication in beauty related industries
  • Promote products and services to clients in a salon
  • Salon reception duties
  • Provide facial skincare
  • Remove hair using waxing techniques
  • Provide manicure treatments
  • Provide pedicure treatments
  • Provide eyelash and brow treatments
  • Apply make-up
  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector

Work experience

A minimum of 30 hours of industry placement is required over the duration of the course.

How will I be assessed?
  • On-going practical assessments throughout the duration of the course for the practical element of the programme.
  • On-line end of unit exams and assignments.

English and maths:

If you don’t already have GCSE English and maths grade 9-4 (A*-C), we will work with you to help you develop your maths and English skills.

Work experience

Personal development skills, study skills and employability skills.

Additional vocational learning and qualifications:
Trips and work placements include Professional Beauty Exhibition: London, Skin Care product training and enrichment workshops. You will also create an image based on a theme in conjunction with your entry in our annual Hair & Beauty Show.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your tutors as you carry out treatments on clients on a continual basis in the College’s salons. It must be stressed that full commitment will be essential for your success, and you will be required to pass online end of unit assessment tests set by the awarding, as well as participate in group presentations.

Course progression

You can progress on to our Beauty Therapy Level 3 course.

Career progression

Successful completion of this study programme will enable you to seek employment as a junior therapist in a range of professional establishments.

Once fully qualified up to Level 3, career paths include working in salons, in spas, on cruise liners or being self -employed and running their own business.

Average salary is £24,000.

Your course tutors will give you advice and guidance on your progression during your study programme.
