Overview
Art and Design (Level 1)This is a general art and design course where you will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of media and techniques such as drawing, painting, surface pattern, and printmaking. It will develop your creative skills for progression on to a Level 2 qualification and also help build your written skills whilst you study English and/or maths alongside.
You will have the opportunity to work on projects with local Artists and Designers.
The course is made up of 7 units – the first 6 are designed to develop your creative skills through lots of experimentation, and build your understanding before you begin an independent project in for the final unit.
Maths and English, work experience and enrichment activities are run alongside, which are compulsory and make up your full study programme.

Entry requirements
3 GCSEs grades 9-1 and a keen interest in the subject .
Other relevant levels of qualification or experience will be considered.
A portfolio of work will be required at the interview process.
What qualification will I gain?
You will gain a Level 1, Diploma in Art, Design and Media.
How will I be assessed?
You will be formatively assessed on a regular basis.

- Unit 3 Introduction to communication skills in art, design and media
- Unit 4 Solving 2D creative problems
- Unit 5 Solving 3D creative problems
- Unit 6 Solving time-based creative problems
- Unit 7 Art, design and media project

Additional information
There are trips to relevant art and galleries and museums. Students are expected to provide their own essential materials for which a kit list will be provided at induction. Bursaries are available for materials and trips on application.

Funding Information
All full-time Level 1 and Level 2 courses are now FREE for everyone, whatever their age. If you are looking to study a Level 3 qualification, courses might still be free if you’re under 19 or 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification.
