Adult Functional Skills English: Entry Level, Level 1 And Level 2Need to improve your English? Would you like to be able to help your kids with their homework? Need Level 2 English as an entry requirement for further studies or QTLS? Do you just want to Brush Up your skills? This course develops your comprehension, spelling and writing skills to improve your job prospects and prepare you for further study.
Adult English Entry level, Level 1, Level 2, are 2 hours per week delivered at various days and times: 09:00-11:00; 11:30-13:30, 14:15-16:15, 18:00-20:00

Need to know
Entry requirements
You do not need any qualifications to start this course; however you must be 19 or over, a UK/EEA citizen and have a minimum Level 1 ability in spoken English. You will be asked to attend a short informal interview and undertake a free assessment before your course starts to help determine your existing skill level.
Please note that the focus of this course is to develop the language skills of people who speak English as their first/home language. If English is not your first language, please refer to our ESOL courses.
How will I be assessed?
Depending upon the level at which you study, you will be entered for a Pearson Functional Skills qualification, available from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
Course content
What will I study?
During the course you will cover topics including:
- Reading
- Punctuation
- Comprehension
- Spelling
- Grammar
- Sounds-Write – Phonics For Adult Learners.
The phonics programme Sounds-Write is incorporated into Entry level classes to help learners improve their basic literacy skills. Research has shown that synthetic phonics is the most effective way to teach reading. It is an effective tool to use with adult learners who struggle with reading and spelling.

This course leads to a nationally-recognised qualification which may help you to gain employment or access further learning programmes.
Additional information
You can enrol in either September or January and will need to attend College for a minimum of two hours per week during the morning, afternoon or evening.
Initial assessments (placement interviews) take place throughout the year.
