Adult English Language GCSE (9-1)This course offers the opportunity to sit the Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language qualification. Offers to this course are made based on prior achievement of GCSE at grade D/3, completion of Level 2 Functional Skills (recent specification) or a GCSE level assessment.
Please note that you will be required to pass an initial assessment to meet the entry requirements. If you don’t meet the entry requirements then you will be referred to the relevant Functional Skills course.

Entry requirements
This course is for adults only and is not available to those studying at other institutions. To access this course you will need to come to an interview and assessment to help us decide whether this is the appropriate course for you. If English is your second language, you may be advised to take an English as a Second Language qualification instead. You may also be advised to take an assessment for Dyslexia if that is needed.
In order to be offered a place on to the GCSE course you will need to attend and complete an assessment on Campus.
If you already hold a GCSE grade 3/D and/or Level 2 Functional skills qualification these will be considered as part of the assessment.
How will I be assessed?
Paper 1
- Section A: Reading – One literature fiction text.
- Section B: Writing – Descriptive or narrative writing.
Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes (64 marks / 40% of GCSE)
Paper 2
- Section A: Reading – One non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text.
- Section B: Writing – Writing to present a viewpoint.
Written exam: 2 hour 5 minutes (96 marks / 60% of GCSE)
There is also a spoken assessment in the form of a presentation which will be included on the final certificate but doesn’t count towards a final grade.
You will be given regular feedback on your work and opportunities to complete mock exams.

The course will include:
- Writing in different styles and formats for different purposes
- Development of grammar, spelling and punctuation
- Reading and analysing a variety of reading material – both 19th century and contemporary texts
- Development of spoken language skills
- Speaking & Listening
Next steps
Course progression:
A grade C/4 or equivalent in GCSE English is often required by employers or for university or professional courses. It is also almost always an entry requirement for A-Levels, and for university or professional courses.

Funding Information
The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.
If you are aged 19 or over you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost of this course more affordable.
