Zaqyas Ali Mahmood

“I was born in Luton but I was made at Bedford College”

Since finishing our Level 3 Electrical and Electronic Engineering course from 2017 to 2019 at Bedford College, Zaqyas Ali Mahmood has studied at Queen Mary University in London and at UCL. During his time at UCL, he was head hunted by ev.energy, who saw his potential and offered him an internship as a hardware technician to setup a testing lab for electric vehicles. He now works full time at ev.energy as a Hardware Integrations Engineer & Software QA Engineer.

While at Bedford College, he was able to take part in end-to-end engineering projects where he would be solving a real-world problem, gain guidance and advice from his tutors and narrow down his passion to electrical and electronics, which he found he really enjoyed due to his practical work, and the structure of how it was taught. Since then, Zaqyas has been solving various projects in different technology related fields, and believes that knowing and experiencing the full process beforehand was “a solid benefit as [he] could jump between different areas within [his] professional role to carry out and deliver project deadlines.”

Zaqyas also learnt that “as much as the tutors and professors are there to help you, ultimately it is down to [himself] as an individual to get stuff done be proactive and showcase [his] efforts to be able to utilise and maximise the support from the tutors.”

When asked what he would say to anyone considering studying at Bedford College, Zaqyas said:

“Don’t think, just do it! But give it your best shot in a subject you are passionate about aside to streamlined education subjects because only then you would wake up and feel excited to go to college, and make the most of all the resources, tutors and professors as they will support you along each step so long as you’re willing to apply it and action it.”
