Students from Tresham College, Kettering, part of The Bedford College Group, have celebrated success at the South East Midlands Inter College Competitions (SEMICC), Sports Coaching Competition.
They delivered standout performances against strong regional competition held at Moulton College in Northamptonshire.
Coaching and Teamwork
Year 2, Level 3 BTEC Sport students Michael Fletcher and Frank Scott were crowned winners following an impressive coaching session. Fellow Tresham students, Olivia Gazeley and Grace Sturman, also represented the College, demonstrating a high standard of coaching and strong teamwork throughout the day.
Testing practical and professional skills
The competition brought together 14 teams from six colleges across the region, including Cambridge Regional College, West Herts College, Milton Keynes College, Northampton College and Moulton College. Designed to test both practical and professional skills, the event gave students the opportunity to apply their learning in a live coaching environment.
Each team was required to plan and deliver a 20-minute PE session for Year 3 children from a local primary school. Sessions focused on developing fundamental movement skills and were delivered within a sports hall setting, requiring participants to demonstrate organisation, adaptability and effective communication with young pupils.
Teams were assessed by a panel of judges from participating colleges, who scored each session against criteria including planning, creativity, communication, leadership and motivation. Following their delivery, students also took part in a Q&A, where they were asked to explain their approach and justify key elements of their session.
Reflecting on the day, Jack Champelovier, Sports Academy Lead at Tresham College, said:
“It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to compete against some of the best young coaches in the region. The standard throughout the day was extremely high and the event was very well organised. Michael and Frank delivered an excellent session that demonstrated their coaching ability and everything they have learned throughout their course. This is further evidence of the outstanding practice within our department.”
Frank Scott added:
“It was a fantastic event and a great opportunity to test myself against top coaches from across the region. We received excellent support from our tutors in the lead up and on the day. We were really pleased with the session we delivered and the feedback from the judges was very positive. To win overall is a surreal feeling and something I will always remember and be proud to add to my CV.”
The Tresham College students were also praised for their professionalism, teamwork and conduct, reflecting the high standards of the college’s sport provision and their commitment to developing future coaches.
