Students from Tresham College Corby, part of The Bedford College Group, are making a meaningful difference in their local community by providing free haircuts to people experiencing homelessness.
Level 3 Barbering students Ellie Masters and Tyrone Rush, based at Tresham College in Corby, recently volunteered their skills at The Hungry Hossee soup kitchen. Over the course of two hours, the students delivered eight haircuts, helping individuals feel refreshed, confident and cared for.
Tutor, Paula Palmer said:
“I was so proud of the students and how they interacted with all the clients so caring and attentive. The students made such an impression on the charity they have asked us back.”
The initiative is part of the national charity Haircuts4Homeless, founded by MBE Stewart Roberts, which provides free haircuts to those in need across the UK.
The opportunity came about through Barbering Tutor Paula Palmer, who was previously teaching local volunteer Sally Layton-Matthews. Sally is now a regional team leader for the charity in Northamptonshire. After hearing about her work and passion for building confidence through hairdressing, Paula was inspired to get involved and extend the opportunity to students.
Sally Layton-Matthews, Regional Team Leader for Haircuts4Homeless, said:
“At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief, bringing the community together to support one another. Initiatives like this show the real impact of people helping people, and it’s inspiring to see students giving back in such a meaningful way.”
Haircuts4Homeless provides the necessary equipment and insurance, enabling trained volunteers to safely deliver services in community settings such as soup kitchens.
The group is already planning to return to The Hungry Hossee in the coming weeks, continuing their commitment to supporting the local community while giving students invaluable hands-on experience.
