A computing lecturer from Tresham College in Kettering, part of The Bedford College Group, has been recognised nationally after winning a prestigious SheCanCode STEM Educator Award.

Neelam Hussain was named winner in the ‘Inspirational STEM Educator of the Year’ category, which celebrates individuals demonstrating creativity, dedication and a commitment to breaking down barriers in STEM education.

Neelam joined Tresham College’s computing team as a permanent lecturer in 2024 after progressing from agency teaching. Inspired by her own college lecturer to pursue a career in computing education, she has become a passionate advocate for encouraging more women and girls to explore careers in technology and digital industries.

Having been the only female on her course while studying in a traditionally male-dominated field, Neelam has used her own experiences to help inspire students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue opportunities within STEM.

She said:

“Winning this award is incredibly special and something I’m really proud of. As someone who was often the only female in the classroom while studying computing, I know how important representation and encouragement can be. Supporting students to build confidence in computing and helping young women see that they belong in STEM is something I care deeply about. I hope this recognition helps inspire more young women to believe that they absolutely have a place within STEM industries.”

Emma Boulton Roe, Head of School for Creative & Digital Industries at Tresham College, praised Neelam’s achievement.
“Neelam’s award win is a fantastic achievement and thoroughly deserved. She brings genuine passion, creativity and dedication to her teaching, and is a constant source of encouragement and inspiration for our students. Her commitment to improving representation within STEM and supporting young women into computing and digital careers is making a real difference, and we are incredibly proud to have her as part of the team at Tresham College.”

The award highlights the growing importance of representation and diversity within STEM industries, as well as the impact educators can have in encouraging future talent.

Neelam’s message to young women considering a career in STEM is simple:

“Believe in yourself and don’t let stereotypes hold you back. Even if you’re the only girl in the room, your voice and perspective matter. Ask for support, stay determined and keep going.”
