The Corby Sixth Form, part of The Bedford College Group, is delighted to announce that Shona McFadyen has been awarded GOLD in the prestigious Pearson National Teaching Awards, being named Outstanding New Teacher of the Year 2025.
Shona, who is currently on maternity leave, received her award at the prestigious award ceremony on Saturday night (29/11) which was presented by the Rt Hon Bridget Phllipson, Secretary of State for Education and television and radio presenter Gaby Roslin.
Representing The Corby Sixth Form and The Bedford College Group overall, Shona has been recognised on a national stage for her exceptional dedication, inspiring teaching practice, and transformative impact on students and colleagues alike.
Nurturing confidence
Since joining The Corby Sixth Form at its opening in September 2023, Shona has played a pivotal role in shaping the science curriculum, fostering academic excellence, and cultivating a culture rooted in compassion, awareness, and social responsibility. Her lessons are known for their immersive and thought-provoking design, bringing science to life by connecting core biological principles to real-world application through her own personal experiences. Her approach not only deepens students’ understanding but also nurtures confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking.
Diagnosed with liver failure and cancer, she began her PGCE in 2018 while balancing her studies with ongoing hospital treatment. Following a life-saving liver transplant in 2022, she joined The Bedford College Group as part of The Corby Sixth Form team in 2023. Shona uses her personal experiences to make Biology relatable and meaningful, teaching her students the importance of resilience, perseverance and ambitious goal-setting.
Bringing Biology to life
Beyond the classroom, she brings Biology to life in the community, exploring biomass and ecology in local parks, and she founded the student-led Impact Makers charity initiative, which champions leadership, compassion and social responsibility. Shona is also committed to nurturing future talent in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), building strong links with local universities and industry partners. An outstanding educator, inspirational mentor and driving force for student success and community engagement, she motivates students to aim high and equips them with the knowledge and confidence to achieve their goals.
