The Bedford College Group is celebrating the success of five outstanding colleagues who have been named finalists in the Milton Keynes Education Awards 2026.

Staff from the Group have been shortlisted across five prestigious categories, recognising excellence in teaching, innovation, inclusion and student impact:

  • Maths Teacher of the Year – Emmanuel Amissah
  • English Teacher of the Year – Rose Sargent
  • IT Teacher of the Year – Christian Núñez Fuentes
  • STEM Teacher of the Year – Steven Minney
  • EDI Champion of the Year – Ashley Spiers

The nominations highlight the exceptional contribution The Bedford College Group staff make in transforming lives through education, supporting students from all backgrounds to build confidence, develop skills and achieve ambitious futures.

Across the five categories, finalists were recognised for combining subject expertise with compassion, creativity and real-world learning experiences.

Finalists

Rose Sargent, shortlisted for English Teacher of the Year, was praised for helping post-16 resit learners rebuild confidence and engagement in English through creative and relatable teaching approaches. Students described her lessons as “engaging, lively and real”, with many crediting her support for changing their attitude towards learning.

STEM Teacher of the Year finalist Steven Minney was recognised for bringing engineering to life through practical learning and industry expertise. Following a life-changing industrial accident and career change into teaching, Steven has inspired students through his resilience, positivity and commitment, including personally creating a new industry-standard welding workshop for learners.

Maths Teacher of the Year finalist Emmanuel Amissah was recognised for transforming students’ confidence in maths through engaging lessons, personalised support and innovative use of technology. Alongside teaching more than 100 students each week, he also mentors colleagues and contributes to curriculum development across the Group.

Christian Núñez Fuentes, finalist for IT Teacher of the Year, was praised for combining industry experience with teaching to give students meaningful real-world experience in computing and web development. Students under his guidance have reached the UK finals of WorldSkills and achieved outstanding results.

Ashley Spiers, shortlisted for EDI Champion of the Year, was recognised for his leadership in equality, diversity and inclusion across the Group. His work supporting staff and student forums, improving recruitment practices and establishing Dunstable’s first Pride event has helped create a more inclusive and supportive culture for staff, students and the wider community.

The winners of the Milton Keynes Education Awards 2026 will be announced later this year.
