The Bedford Sixth Form, part of The Bedford College Group, is celebrating.

One of its students was elected as the new Deputy Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) for Bedford, following this year’s highly competitive local elections.

Iqra Qadeer, aged 16, who studies Politics, Philosophy and Sociology at The Bedford Sixth Form, secured the role after a strong turnout of young voters from across the borough.

This year’s election saw eight candidates stand from seven educational establishments, with a total of 4,178 verified votes cast.

Iqra will serve as Deputy Member of Youth Parliament for Bedford over the next two years, representing the views of young people locally and nationally.

In her role as Deputy MYP, Iqra will support youth-led initiatives across the borough, working closely to develop campaigns, lead projects and ensure young people’s voices are heard on key issues. She will also engage with local councillors and organisations, while contributing to national conversations affecting young people.

Speaking about her appointment, Iqra said:

“Being elected as Deputy Member of Youth Parliament for Bedford is a huge honour. I’m passionate about making sure young people’s voices are heard and represented, and I’m excited to work on issues that really matter to us locally and nationally. I’m particularly looking forward to engaging with young people across Bedford and helping to drive positive change within our community.”

Iqra will now begin her term focusing on issues affecting young people in Bedford, while working to increase youth participation and drive positive change within the local community.
